Julien Guinand

Photography

Julien Guinand is an artist photographer who studied literature, music and plastic arts, and graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles.
He has been resident at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto, winner of a national commission from the Cnap (Les Regards du grand Paris) and received support from the Artists’ Foundation for a long-term project in Japan.
In 2021 he will be in residence at the art centre “Le Point du Jour” in Cherbourg. His work has been the subject of two monographic publications by Éditions 205.

Most of the time, he works in collaboration with people from different fields, such as philosophers (Hidetka Ishida), physicists (Jean-Christophe Valmalette) and of course with the local actors of the territories he has photographed. He carries out documentary and experimental photography, mostly in the field, in places where a social and environmental history is taking place. But he can also summon other reasons.

His favourite themes are catastrophe and collapse, the subsumption of nature. He pays pictorial attention to the subjects he describes and documents, working within a tension between text and image-object. His work is positioned at the crossroads of documentary photography, pictorial tradition and anthropological literature.

Julien Guinand is also the co-founder of the Bloo Photography School, which he has been directing since 2009. He has been working at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Lyon since 2005. His work is exhibited at the Françoise Besson gallery. Il est représenté par la galerie Françoise Besson.
